Hokie ClubGREENSBORO, N.C. – Three members of the Virginia Tech men’s soccer team were named to the 2013 All-Academic ACC Men’s Soccer Team, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. Seniors Robert Alberti and Kyle Renfro and sophomore Daniel Lauretano each were named to the team. Renfro earns this distinction for the third time in his career while Lauretano has been named to the team twice.
“This is an outstanding accomplishment for these three young men and all they’ve been able to accomplish not only on the field, but also in the classroom,” explained head coach Mike Brizendine. “Countless hours are spent traveling on the road, practicing and preparing their bodies for competition and to be able to achieve such an honor is a testament to their time management skills and overall will to succeed.”
Alberti, a marketing management major, earns this distinction for the first time in his career after starting 15 matches for the Hokies in 2013. Alberti led the Hokies in both goals (six) and points (14) and tied for the team-lead in assists (2).
Renfro,a history major and a three-time All-Academic honoree, started in all 17 games for the Hokies this season and led the ACC in saves for the third straight season. For his efforts during the year, Renfro was named Second Team All-Region, first team All-State, became only the second Hokie to garner First Team All-ACC honors.
Lauretano, a university studies major earning the honor for the second time in as many years, appeared in all 17 games for Tech making 11 starts. Lauretano scored twice for the Hokies during the 2013 season, once in a loss to Fordham and once in a win over High Point.
“I would like to thank the staff in Student-Athlete Academic Support Services. Without their help and guidance, our team would not be able to achieve the academic success that they do. They do a tremendous job making sure our student-athletes here at Tech perform to the best of their ability in the classroom,” concluded Brizendine.
All 12 schools that compete in men’s soccer are represented on this year’s All-ACC Academic Team, led by Notre Dame with six honorees. Three student-athletes on the team also earned All-America honors, while three additional players were named Freshman All-Americans. Fourteen members of the squad earned either All-ACC or All-ACC Freshman honors.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
