Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech head women’s soccer coach Chugger Adair announced Wednesday the hiring of Matt Gwilliam as an assistant coach. Gwilliam returns to Tech after coaching the Hokies for three seasons from 2007-2009. He will serve as a goalkeeper’s coach, assist with recruiting efforts and help with many other aspects of the program.
“We are excited to announce Matt Gwilliam joining our staff,” Adair said. “I think it’s a good fit. He’s been a part of the growth of our program in the past so it’s great to have him back. He will have many hats while he’s here, not just the goalkeeper’s coach. We’re excited for him to be a Hokie once again.”
Gwilliam most recently served as an assistant coach at Colorado College where he primarily worked with goalkeepers and defenders, as well as playing a role in the recruiting efforts. In his two seasons with the Tigers, he helped coach the team to 20 shutouts and 156 saves.
Prior to his time at Colorado College, he was the head coach at Temple University from 2011-2012. He has also been an assistant at Virginia Tech, Marshall University and The Citadel.
The Quakertown, Pennsylvania, native was an assistant with the 2009 Tech team that advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first-time in program history.
Gwilliam was a goalkeeper at Elizabethtown College during his college years from 1997-2000, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in social studies education. He was first-team All-Middle Atlantic Conference selection and earned all-academic honors all four years. He helped the Blue Jays win a conference championship and earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Gwilliam has received an Advanced National Coaching Diploma, a National Coaching Diploma and a National Goalkeeping Diploma through the NSCAA.
He comes to Blacksburg with his wife Krista and his two sons, Benjamin and Jackson.
