Hokie ClubGREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech placed four on the Men’s Tennis All-ACC teams with Joao Monteiro, Andreas Bjerrehus, Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro earning recognition as announced by Commissioner John Swofford on Thursday.
Monteiro was named to the first team while Bjerrehus picks up second team honors. Contini and Tessaro were placed on the third team. This marks Bjerrehus’ and Contini’s fourth All-ACC recognition in their careers, making them the only players in program history to be named All-ACC all four seasons. The only other player to earn conference honors all four seasons is Aaron Marchetti to the All-A10 team from 1996-1999. In addition, they are the only players on this year’s list to have earned the honor four consecutive seasons.
Monteiro, who picked up his third straight All-ACC recognition, went 15-6 this season in the No. 1 duals, ranking in the top-25 all spring and currently ranks 14th in the latest poll. He secured 11 wins versus nationally ranked opponents. Monteiro claimed the ITA Atlantic Region singles title in the fall to move on to the ITA National Indoor Championships where he became the first Tech player to advance to the semifinal round at the national event. He also ranked in the top-25 (currently 17th) all spring in doubles as he paired up with teammate Bjerrehus to post an 11-4 record at the one.
Bjerrehus recorded a 15-5 tally in duals with an 11-5 mark at the two. He currently ranks 69th in the latest ITA singles standings. He represented the Hokies in the fall at the ITA All-American Championships. In addition to his singles’ success, Bjerrehus has ranked in the top-25 in doubles throughout the spring and currently sits at 17th with an 11-4 record in the one with teammate Monteiro. Outside of Tech, Bjerrehus represented his native country of Denmark in the Davis Cup this year.
Contini has tallied a 15-5 record this season with a 10-4 mark at the three and is currently 109th in the ITA standings. At the ACC Championships, the Hokies’ deciding point against FSU in the quarterfinals came down to Contini on three where he trailed 4-1 in the third set before rallying to win 7-6(2). With the win he helped Tech advance to the semifinals for the first time in program history. In the fall, Contini was runner-up at the ITA Atlantic Region in doubles and represented the Hokies at the ITA All-American Championships.
Tessaro is 13-7 with a 10-4 mark at the four this spring and is currently 78th in the ITA. In addition, Tessaro is 9-6 in doubles at the two. He advanced to the finals of the ITA Atlantic Region and the quarterfinals in singles. Tessaro also represented the Hokies this year at the ITA All-American Championships.
This is the second consecutive season the Hokies have placed four student-athletes on the All-ACC team and is just the second time in program history.
