Hokies to open NCAA singles, doubles championships

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech will have representatives in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships for the first time since 1999 as Joao Monteiro and Andreas Bjerrehus prepare to take the court this week at the 2016 NCAA Tennis Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Monteiro, ranked 14th, has earned a top-16 seed for the singles event, becoming Tech’s third All-American in program history and the first since Aaron Marchetti earned the honor in 1999. Monteiro enters the field with a 33-11 overall record, including 15-6 this spring in the No. 1 duals.

In addition, Monteiro will pair up with teammate Bjerrehus for the doubles competition. The duo enter the event ranked 21st nationally and have tallied a 22-10 record this season, including 11-5 at the No. 1 during the spring.

Monteiro will open singles play on Wednesday, May 25 at 3 p.m. CT against Southern California’s 41st-ranked Nick Crystal. Crystal was 24-10 on the season with a 10-2 record at the No. 2 during duals.

Doubles will begin on Thursday, May 26 with times being decided following the first round of singles tomorrow. Bjerrehus and Monteiro will face San Diego’s 40th-ranked Filip Vittek and Jordan Angus in the opening round. The Toreros’ pair tallied a 13-6 overall record on the season with a 10-3 record after the fall to enter the spring ranked seventh.
