HOKIES HEAD TO MORGANTOWN

  • 14th-ranked Virginia Tech hits the road again this week as the Hokies get set to face West Virginia for a midweek dual at 7 p.m. in Morgantown, W.Va. on Wednesday, Dec. 19.
  • The match will be streamed live on FloWrestling and live updates will be provided on Twitter at @HokiesWrestling.
  • The Mountaineers are 12-9 all-time against Virginia Tech but have lost their last three meetings with the Hokies.
  • West Virginia's last win over Virginia Tech was a 39-13 victory in 2004.
  • Last season, the Hokies handled West Virginia at Cassell Coliseum, 30-6.

SHORT TIME – WEST VIRGINIA

  • West Virginia is led by first-year head coach Tim Flynn, who spent last 21 years as the head coach at Edinboro.
  • Before assuming head coaching duties, Flynn was an assistant at Edinboro where he coached Tech head coach Tony Robie, who was a two-time All-American for the Fighting Scots and was an NCAA finalist in 1997.
  • The Mountaineers have two Virginia natives on their roster in freshman Trey Anderson (Virginia Beach, Kellam High School) and redshirt junior JD Gregory (Hanover, Hanover High School).
  • West Virginia is 1-3 on the season with a 22-14 win over Northern Colorado on Nov. 1 

SHORT TIME – VIRGINIA TECH

  • The Hokies have six wrestlers ranked by Intermat this week – No. 15 Korbin Myers (133), No. 8 Mekhi Lewis (165), No. 5 David McFadden (174), No. 9 Zack Zavatsky (184), No. 15 Tom Sleigh (197) and No. 7 Billy Miller (285).
  • After some mild shakeups across the country over the weekend, McFadden entered at No. 20 in FloWrestling's pound-for-pound rankings
  • Robie served as an assistant coach under Flynn at Edinboro for the 1999-00 campaign.
  • Robie also cut his teeth in coaching at West Virginia where he was an assistant under former head coach Craig Turnbull.

HOKIES TOP PRINCETON

  • Virginia Tech picked up its first dual meet win of the season on Dec. 7 with a 24-16 victory over Princeton.
  • The match was highlighted by redshirt sophomore B.C. LaPrade's 5-4 decision over Quincy Monday in two tiebreaker periods.
  • LaPrade's win was the first of four straight wins for the Hokies between 157 and 184, including major decisions from Mekhi Lewis at 165 and Zack Zavatsky at 184.
  • Redshirt junior Korbin Myers put the match out of a reach with a win by fall, his first as a Hokie, in 3:41.
