BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech wrestling program will send multiple competitors to Las Vegas this week for the 2019 Marine Corps US Open on April 26-27.

In the junior field, freshman Cody Howard will wrestle at 92 kg and redshirt freshman John Borst will go at 125 kg. Incoming freshmen Sam Latona (57 kg) and Bryce Andonian (70 kg) will also scrap in the junior open. In FloWrestling's final Class of 2019 Big Board, Andonian was ranked 28th and Latona was slotted at No. 41.
Tech will see recently appointed assistant coach Cody Brewer (61 kg), assistant coach Jared Frayer (74 kg), sophomore Hunter Bolen (86 kg) and volunteer assistant coach Ty Walz (97 kg) compete in the senior open. Brewer earned the six seed at his weight, Frayer is seeded eighth and Walz is the No. 2 seed.
For Frayer, this will be his first time competing since taking the mat for Team USA at the 2012 Olympics in London. He won the US Open in 2010 at 66 kg.
The top-eight finishers at each weight for the juniors will earn a spot at the Junior World Team Trials. For the seniors, the top-seven finishers at each weight will qualify for the Senior World Team Trials. Both trials will be held in Raleigh, N.C. on May 16-18.
Due to earning spots on their respective world teams last year, redshirt junior David McFadden (U23 World Team) and redshirt freshman Mekhi Lewis (Junior World Team) have both already qualified for the trials in Raleigh.
