JMU transfer Brown joins Hokies

BLACKSBURG – James Madison outfielder Kelsey Brown will transfer to Virginia Tech and join the Hokies' softball program this upcoming fall as a true sophomore.

"I am grateful to have the opportunity to be part of such a strong softball program and receive a great education at Virginia Tech," Brown said. "I'm incredibly thankful for everything and everyone that helped me get here. I can't wait to be a Hokie."

Brown comes to Tech after a solid rookie campaign in Harrisonburg, playing in 44 games and earning 13 starts. She led the Dukes in stolen bases with 10 and posted a career-high two against Elon on March 24, while scoring 23 runs on the season.

"I knew of Kelsey during her early high school days," Tech coach Pete D'Amour said. "She was known as not only one of the fastest kids on the east coast but one of the fastest kids in the country.

"She has a grit to her and enjoys competition. I'm looking forward to her joining our program."

Getting it done in the classroom too, Brown made the spring Dean's List. Before her time at JMU, she played high school ball at Battefield while growing up in Haymarket, Virginia. A speedster on the base paths and in the outfield, she bats left and throws right.

Brown was a four-time all-conference pick in high school and made the all-state team twice. She still is the VHSL career stolen bases leader with 133.

Coming from an athletic family, Brown's father, Jim, played baseball at George Mason, her brother, Collin, plays baseball at Catholic and her uncle, Michael, played baseball for Clemson and went on to play for the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners.

The Hokies will be back at it in the fall at Tech Softball Park, playing a fall slate that will be announced at a later date.
