Get to know our newest Hokie – Avery Tharrington

BLACKSBURG – As it has been done now for several years, the Virginia Tech women's soccer program introduces its signing class in a different way. Rather than announcing all of them and their accomplishments in one release, Tech highlights each new signee individually with her own release and a "Get to Know" Q&A. This method will continue for the 2021 signing class in our "Welcome Wednesday" features until all of our new Hokies have been announced.

The fifth 2021 newcomer to be announced is Avery Tharrington, a 5-foot-7 midfielder from Springfield, Virginia. Tharrington currently attends South County High School, and she anticipates majoring in clinical neuroscience at Tech. A member of BRYC Elite for six seasons, Tharrington and her club team advanced to ECNL Nationals in 2018 and 2019. Behind Tharrington's role in the midfield, BRYC Elite won the ECNL Mid-Atlantic Conference championship three straight years (2018-20).

"We are elated to have Avery join our soccer family at Virginia Tech," Hokies' head coach Chugger Adair expressed. "Avery is a multifaceted player, who can control the center of midfield. Avery has a tremendous soccer IQ and ability to bring other players into the game with her passing and movement, as well as her leadership personality. Avery will add to our possession in the midfield and allow us to play the style of soccer we enjoy."

Why did you choose Tech? I chose Tech because of the high standard that players are held to, both academically and athletically. Plus, the family environment of the team was something that I knew I wanted to be a part of.

What was your favorite thing about your visit? My favorite thing about my visit was being able to experience the life of a VTWS athlete, as well as meet my future teammates.

What do you like about the Tech soccer program? I like the competitiveness Tech brings to the ACC because it is clear that the coaches and players will do anything to be at the top, which is an environment that I love.

What are your soccer strengths? My soccer strengths are my awareness of the game, my communication, and passing accuracy.

Who is your favorite pro player (why)? My favorite pro player is Granit Xhaka (current player for Arsenal) because of his ability to set the tempo of a game, as well as his grit to make sure his team is on top. Even more so, his leadership both on the field and off the field make him someone that I look up to.

What is your most memorable soccer moment (why)? My most memorable soccer moment was in 2019, when my team was playing against Richmond (a tough rival), and we won, which meant we were Conference Champions and would be the first seed going into Nationals.

What do you think you will major in (why)? I plan to major in Clinical Neuroscience and take that into becoming a nurse.

What's one thing you'd want Tech fans to know about you? I have been snowboarding since I was four.
