MILTON, Ga. — Mark Lawrence Jr. carded a 1-over 211 to tie for 19th and lead Virginia Tech at the ACC Men's Golf Championship, which concluded the stroke play portion of the event Sunday afternoon at Capital City Club's Crabapple Course.
Behind rounds of 70, 70 and 72, Lawrence, Jr. earned his fifth top 20 showing of the season and his best-ever finish at an ACC Championship. The graduate student tallied a team-best nine birdies.
Cameron Moore tied for 33rd at 6-over 216, while Daniel Azallion tied for 37th at 8-over 218. Azallion registered a 1-under 69 in the second round.
Connor Burgess, who led the field in par-5 scoring at 5-under-par, tied for 43rd at 11-over 221.
The Hokies totaled an 867 to take 10th in the team standings. North Carolina, ranked 17th in the latest Golfstat rankings, ran away from the field during the stroke play portion of the tournament. Paced by four golfers in the red, the Tar Heels fired a 26-under 814 to secure the No. 1 seed in the match play portion of the championship.
Fourth-ranked Clemson secured the second seed with an 11-under 829, while NC State and Florida State locked up the third and fourth seeds, respectively. The match play semifinals began immediately after stroke play ended. Winner of the semifinal matches will advance to Monday's final to determine the ACC champion.
UNC's Peter Fountain became the first freshman since 2006 to win the ACC individual title, signing for a 10-under 200. He edged NC State's Benjamin Shipp by a stroke.
