Improvement has been made and that main focus has come from an intentionality to compete in everything. Head coach Brent Pry has tried to instill that since taking over in Blacksburg and his players are buying in.

"With Coach Pry, he emphasizes competition a lot," running back Jalen Holston said in a press conference last week. "He really instills that competitive mindset. The coaching staff has challenged us to work and a lot of my teammates have accepted the challenge."
The competitiveness has trickled down to the offensive line, where that group is led by run game coordinator and offensive line coach Joe Rudolph. Rudolph is recognized as one best offensive line coaches in the nation and redshirt sophomore Jesse Hanson and his teammates would second that.
"Coach Rudolph is like the most technical coach ever," Hanson said. "He's a teacher and a do-it-the-right-way kind of guy. We've been stressing competing. But one thing Coach Rudolph tells us is that we're going to compete the right way. We're going to win by using the right technique."
Defensively, the group has had to adjust to a new style of defense, the 4-3.
"As we teach the guys, the thing that I've been really pleased with is how they've adjusted to our language, to our terminology and also how they've adjusted to the concepts that we've been trying to teach," defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Chris Marve said. "We got a lot of guys who are very, very eager to learn and have taken the time to really apply the things that we've been trying to teach them."
