AIKEN, S.C. — Virginia Tech's Connor Burgess and Connor Johnson Jr. tied for 17th to lead the Hokies to a fifth-place finish at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, which concluded Tuesday at the par 70, 6,617-yard Palmetto Golf Club.
For the second straight tournament, Johnson Jr. posted a top-20 showing. The senior fired a 4-over 214 that included a final-round 68 (-2). He had four birdies and an eagle over his final 18 holes.
Joining Johnson Jr. at 4-over 214 was Burgess, who also recorded a final-round 68.
Tech finished fifth as a team, totaling an 863 (292-291-280). South Carolina, ranked 43rd by Golfstat, won the team title at 8-under 832. The Gamecocks were the only team to finish in the red, while Virginia was runner-up at 2-over 842.
A pair of Gamecocks finished 1-2 in the individual race. Ryan Hall shot an impressive 10-under 200 to edge teammate Jack Wall by five shots.
The Hokies return to the course March 18-20 at the Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
