Sept. 3, 2016 - Virginia Tech 36, Liberty 13 (Blacksburg, Va.)
In its first-ever matchup, Tech shut down Liberty 36-13 in its 2016 season opener. The Lunch Pail defense locked it down that day, holding the Liberty offense to only 70 yards through the air and 160 yards total. Tech was flying around the field, forcing four turnovers, two TFLs and a safety. The Hokies struck first, with a 23-yard strike from quarterback Jerod Evans to wide receiver Cam Phillips with just under four minutes into the game. A pair of touchdowns from the Flames put them up 13-10 two minutes into the second quarter, but after that, it was all Tech. The Hokies proceeded to score 26 unanswered points and never gave Liberty a chance to get back into the game. Evans ended the day going 20-for-32 for 221 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 46 yards on the ground. The wide receiver/tight end corps showed out that game, with three of them finding the end zone. Isaiah Ford led the team with 117 yards, while Bucky Hodges hauled in two touchdowns.
