NEWS & NOTES

THE SERIES

  • Virginia owns the overall series, 25-3, although Tech has taken two wins in the last five meetings. Before their first win in 2012, the Hokies were 0-17 against the Cavaliers.
  • Virginia Tech earned its first win in Charlottesville on April 24, 2021 when it knocked off the No. 8-ranked Cavaliers, 20-15.
  • Led by a six-goal performance from Paige Petty, the Hokies stormed out to a 13-5 lead in the first half and were able to hold on for its lone ranked win of the 2021 season.

A WIN WOULD...

  • Be Virginia Tech's fifth consecutive road win.
  • Be Virginia Tech's third win over Virginia in the last six meetings.
  • Be Virginia Tech's fifth win in six games.
  • Be Virginia Tech's second ranked win of the season.
  • Secure an above .500 record for the season.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Hokies are coming off a 17-11 win over Furman on Monday that wrapped up their regular season home slate.
  • It was a well-balanced result for Tech, which restricted the Paladins to five goals through the first three quarters.
  • Olivia Vergano led the team with four goals, while Maura O'Malley, Ella Rishko and Paige Tyson had three goals apiece.
  • Virginia Tech dominated the draw, 22-10. Freshman Sarah Gresham brought in 14 draw controls, which pushed her past the Virginia Tech single-season draw control record (96) that was held by Tristan McGinley.

ON THE DRAW

  • Virginia Tech have a scary good draw control tandem in Gresham and Vergano. With 100 and 90 draw controls apiece, they are the only teammates with 90+ this season.
  • Gresham, who leads all freshmen in NCAA Division I women's lacrosse in draw controls, reached 100 on the season in Tech's last game and had a school-record 20 draw controls earlier this season against Akron.
  • Vergano, who has 163 in her career, already ranks eighth all-time at Virginia Tech.
  • Both Gresham and Vergano benefit from the instruction of associate head coach Shannon Jacobitti, who ranks second all-time in Florida's program history in draw controls with 303.
