Sergio Lopez Miro selected to International Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech director of swimming and diving Sergio Lopez Miro has been selected to the International Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame class of 2023, as announced by the organization Tuesday. Lopez Miro joins fellow nominees Tim Murphy (Penn State) and Tom Himes (North Baltimore Aquatic Club) to make up the three-member class.

"Being inducted into the Hall of Fame as a coach is a privilege and an honor," Lopez Miro expressed. "I have to thank so many people, from all the coaches I had, to the coaches that work with me here at Virginia Tech. What being inducted means to me is that it shows a by-product of a lot of years of work. This happened by working hard, but also by being lucky to work with such a talented group of individuals. It also happened by having the facilities and the opportunities at the places I have worked, like Virginia Tech, to keep doing what I love to do."

Lopez Miro, who enters his sixth season at the helm of the Hokies, has steered Tech's swimming and diving program to notable success on the national stage. Last season, Youssef Ramadan delivered the program's first individual title in program history by capturing gold in the 100 fly in Minneapolis, Minn. Ignited by six All-America performances, the men's team placed ninth at the 2023 national championship, which was the program's best finish in school history. On the women's side, the Hokies finished 20th – their best showing at the national championship in over 10 years.

A native of Barcelona, Spain, Lopez Miro is a four-time Olympic coach and two-time Olympian, including a bronze medalist in the 1988 Olympics in the 200 breaststroke.

The class of 2023 will be honored on Saturday, October 14, 2023 in an evening ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
