CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Senior Gehrig Ebel collected three extra base hits and senior Ben Watson added two more, but the Virginia Tech Hokies fell to the No. 12 NC State Wolfpack 19-9 on Wednesday.
Freshman Brett Renfrow (6-4) started and took the loss on the mound for Virginia Tech (32-22).
Ebel's three extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-4 day, and included two doubles, a home run, a walk and three RBI. Watson made his contribution with two doubles and three RBI, part of a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Freshman David McCann also chipped in for the Hokies, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 10-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Ebel put Virginia Tech on the board with a leadoff home run off freshman Ryan Marohn.
The Wolfpack expanded their lead to 12-1 before the Hokies offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the sixth. The Virginia Tech offense exploded for six runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Ebel and a two-run double from McCann, which brought the score to 12-7 in favor of the Wolfpack.
NC State built their lead to 19-7 before the Virginia Tech offense got back to work, reducing that lead to 19-9 in the eighth. The Hokies pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Watson that scored freshman Jake Slade and Ebel. The Hokies were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
