JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Newcomers shined Monday night as the Hokies brought home a 1-0 victory against ETSU.
The match began charged on both sides, ultimately leading to a straight red card shown to ETSU in the 11th minute. Virginia Tech’s free kick after the whistle was hit over the crossbar.
The Hokies' offense was muted until a Noe Uwimana cross found the head of Dagur Traustason in the 30th minute to give the visitors the 1-0 edge. Amir Ariely was credited the second assist on the play that slowly trickled into the far post.
Tech laid on the offense in the second half with 12 shots, including an attempt from Osi Onwudiwe that just barely missed the inside of the far post for the brace.
ETSU mounted an attack in the final minute attempt, attacking on the breakaway, before being shut down by three Virginia Tech defenders to hold on for the win.
