Hokie ClubCLEMSON, S.C. – Virginia Tech, who faced a two-goal deficit at the 63rd minute, came out with a draw on the road at Clemson Friday evening to conclude the regular season.
The Hokies enter the postseason with a 7-3-5 overall record and 2-3-3 ledger in ACC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies quickly attacked as the ball kicked off, recording the first shot of the match within the first minute of action. Sam Joseph saved two Clemson attempts before the Tigers broke the deadlock at the 22nd minute to take the lead. Virginia Tech saw one more attempt blocked ,then with a minute left in the first half, Beltran Alvarez (44’) used his head to connect on Declan Quill’s feed to the back post to equalize, 1-1.
Clemson roared out of the halftime break scoring two in a 13-minute span, the last a penalty kick, to claim a 3-1 lead. Tech got themselves back in it with goals in the 67th and 69th minutes to keep the match even. Quill netted the second of the match for the Hokies on the Joao Felicio cross before assisting on Yanis Belatrache’s one-timer.
Virginia Tech’s defense stepped up as Joseph saved four of Clemson’s final six shots in the match to leave Death Valley with a draw.
GAME NOTES
- Virginia Tech earned their seventh tie in the 20-match all-time series with Clemson
- It was just the fourth result on the road for the Hokies against the Tigers
- Clemson outshot Tech 19-12 while earning two more corner kicks, 6-4
- Both Beltran Alvarez and Yanis Belatrache scored their first goals of the season in the draw
