BLACKSBURG – The Hokies find their first win of the spring season, 5-2 over the App State Mountaineers on Friday, Jan. 23, at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Tech clinched the doubles point dominantly, winning all three matches. Alston Myatt and Linda Ziets-Segura were rolling with a 6-0 win on Court 2. The other two pairs, Arina Gamretkaia and Özlem Uslu and Elizaveta Castillo and Kirsten Woods, both found 6-4 wins on their respective courts.
The Hokies kept their momentum moving forward in singles. Laima Frosch recorded the team's first win, sweeping Taya Powell of App State 6-1, 6-3. Shortly after, Gamretkaia defeated Naledi Manyube 6-2, 7-5.
Freshmen Castillo and Myatt started their collegiate careers with sweeps on Courts 4 and 6, respectively. Castillo defeated Ruby Broadbent, 6-3, 6-2, while Myatt took down Alexi Clevelan, 6-4, 6-2.
Despite a strong fight from Uslu in her singles match, she ultimately fell to Savannah Dada-Mascoll, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.
