HOW IT HAPPENED
Virginia Tech and No. 13 Louisville went back-and-forth to open the contest as Carys Baker opened the scoring at 9:22 going up for the second-chance basket before keeping the game even, 6-6 at 5:51, as she dribbled inside for a mid-range shot. The Cardinals proceeded to knock down two triples for six quick points, but Kilah Freelon (5:05) helped to keep it close, 12-9, with her dribble to switch sides of the hoop for the basket. With eight seconds remaining in the period, No. 13 Louisville drove for a layup as the Hokies trailed, 19-12.
After regrouping early in the second frame, Freelon helped to ignite a 6-2 run for Tech as she floated the ball in the paint. After some back-and-forth scoring, Samyha Suffren stole the Cardinals inbound pass and scored to draw within ten, 32-22, at the 3:16 mark. No. 13 Louisville exploded for five points in the final minute of the first half as the Hokies fell behind, 44-27 headed into the locker room.
Tech saw the offense flow through Freelon’s (8:29) two makes at the line to open the second half. The Cardinals scored eight unanswered points until the Hokies responded with seven of their own started by Baker’s (4:50) hook shot and wrapped up by a layup and make from the line by Mackenzie Nelson (3:09). No. 13 Louisville knocked down two consecutive triples to end the quarter, 70-42.
