Responsibilities: Derek Gwinn was promoted to Executive Associate AD/Compliance in the fall 2023. He oversees all aspects of the Compliance office for the Hokies, is the point of contact for NCAA and state guidance related to all NIL matters, and coordinates the institution's policies, procedures, and systems to ensure NCAA and ACC compliance. He serves as the sport administrator for Men's Golf. He is responsible for the development and implementation of policies, procedures and systems that ensure Virginia Tech’s 22 teams achieve success within NCAA, ACC and University regulations. He is the liaison between the NCAA and ACC offices regarding all legislative matters and coordinates the institution's rules education and monitoring efforts for all athletics department coaches, staff and student-athletes. Additionally, Gwinn serves on the Athletics Department Diversity and Inclusion Council and, in 2017, was appointed as a senior representative for Virginia Tech's Inclusive VT that assists in advancing diversity climate and culture-related issues across campus.

At Virginia Tech: Gwinn came to Virginia Tech as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and served in the role until he was promoted to Associate AD in 2019. He was elevated to his current position as Senior Associate AD for Compliance in January 2021. He has been a member of the National Association of Athletics Compliance (NAAC) for 15 years.
Prior to Virginia Tech: Gwinn oversaw the compliance operation as the Associate AD for Compliance at Marshall University for seven years before joining the Hokies in 2013. Prior to Marshall, he served as Compliance Coordinator at Ohio University from 2005-2007, which followed his role as graduate assistant in compliance at Marshall from 2003-05.

Of Note: Gwinn and his wife enjoy spending time outdoors with their dogs and traveling. Additionally, Gwinn enjoys time on the golf course, as well as supporting his favorite sports teams – the Atlanta Braves, the Thundering Herd and the Hokies.
Personal: A native of Pence Springs, West Virginia, Gwinn currently resides in Christiansburg, Virginia with his wife, Shelby, their twin girls, Avery and Olivia, and their dogs Ozzy and Maisy.
