Assistant Director of Broadcast Services, Women's Basketball & Baseball Play-By-Play

Evan Hughes enters his fourth season as the Assistant Director of Broadcast Services and Voice of Virginia Tech women’s basketball and baseball. In that role, Hughes provides radio play-by-play coverage of both sports across the Virginia Tech Sports Network via LEARFIELD. Additionally, he is the host of the Hokie Sports Insider Podcast, a weekly show that provides updates on all sports at Virginia Tech with exclusive interviews from players and coaches. Hughes also does play-by-play for the ACC Network Extra at Virginia Tech, broadcasting soccer, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, softball and lacrosse.

Officially named to his current position on Aug. 2, 2021, Hughes joined the broadcast team following his graduation from Virginia Tech’s School of Communication after completing a degree in multimedia journalism and a concentration in sports media and analytics. As a senior, he was named the 2021 recipient of the Jim Nantz Award, honoring the nation’s top collegiate sports broadcaster. He became the first student from Virginia Tech to win the award.

During his time as a student at Tech, Hughes did play-by-play work for ACC Network Extra for four years as an undergraduate. From 2018-2020, he served as the Voice of the St. Cloud Rox in the Northwoods League, where he was named the 2018 Broadcaster of the Year. Additionally, Hughes hosted the Tech Sideline Podcast, covering Virginia Tech athletics. 

Hughes grew up in Rockville, Virginia with his mother Lynne, who is the founder and CEO of Comfort Zone Camp, and his father Kelly, a Virginia Tech men’s soccer player (1981-85) under coach Jerry Cheynet. His sister, Jamie, is a 2024 graduate of Virginia Tech.
