Sarah Wattenberg joined the Virginia Tech staff in October 2023 as the Tutor Coordinator and in January 2025 was promoted to the Assistant Director of SAASS. She currently supports the men’s tennis team as well as the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams as their athletic academic advisor.
Before joining the SAASS staff at Virginia Tech, Wattenberg most recently worked as the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance for UNLV Athletics in Las Vegas, Nevada from 2017 until 2023. Serving on the department’s executive leadership team, her main responsibilities were oversight, coordination and integration of the Sports Medicine, Strength & Conditioning, Sport Psychology, Sport Nutrition and Sport Science units in the department. Sarah served as the Athletics Health Care Administrator and Drug Testing Coordinator as well as a Title IX Deputy Coordinator for the institution.
Prior to UNLV, Wattenberg served as the Andrew '78 and Margaret Paul Assistant Director of Athletics for Student Services at her alma mater, Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York from 2012-2017 where she oversaw the academic counseling, personal needs counseling, and athletic counseling for all Big Red student-athletes. Wattenberg earned her master's degree in 2005 from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in sports medicine before returning to Cornell as a certified athletic trainer from 2005-2012. While an undergraduate at Cornell, Sarah was a two-time team captain of the Women's Track and Field team, an Ivy League Champion in the shot put, and graduated as the school record holder in the javelin and hammer throw.
Sarah and her husband Clint reside in Blacksburg with their children Payton and Landon.
