Hokies fall to Davidson, 1-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. – In a very even match, the difference in the Hokies’ trip to Davidson, N.C., came down to one goal, scored by Davidson’s Alex Caskey late in the first half. The score proved final, with the Wildcats prevailing 1-0. Virginia Tech is now 1-4-1 on the year.

All of the statistic columns read nearly identical. Each team took nine shots, four in the first half, and five in the second half. Virginia Tech took five corner kicks to Davidson’s four. Davidson earned nine fouls while Virginia Tech had eight. In a close battle, Caskey put the ball in the corner off a header from six yards out off a Peter Paras assist in the 44th minute.

David Clemens and Mikey Minutillo provided the offensive pressure for the Hokies, each taking multiple shots, with Minutillo and Clemens taking one shot on goal in three and two shots, respectively. Co-captain David Fiorello also recorded a shot on goal, as did Austin Stewart, who looked to rebut immediately after Davidson’s goal in the closing seconds of the first half. Additionally, Robert Alberti and Adama Wakai recorded one shot for the match. Kyle Renfro, in his fourth start of the season, earned two saves to push his season total to ten.

The Hokies will next face their second ACC contest of the season, heading Raleigh, N.C., to face the N.C. State Wolfpack. Teams are set to take the pitch Saturday at 7 p.m.
