(theACC.com) – Announced today by the Atlantic Coast Conference, Virginia Tech senior goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn has been selected as the ACC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Hokies remain perfect on the season with a pair of road wins last weekend.
The honor is the fourth of her Tech career, which is now the most ever for a women's soccer player at the school. McGlynn picked up her first on Oct. 3, 2017 as a sophomore, and was twice chosen as the defensive player of the week last year (Aug. 21 and Oct. 2). The only other Hokie with multiple selections by the ACC is Murielle Tiernan, who earned the last of her three offensive awards on Sept. 6, 2016.
McGlynn continued the hot start to her final season at Tech by registering shutouts No. 5 and 6 of 2019 in 16th-ranked Tech's 2-0 weekend, as the Hokies won the Battle by the Beach and she was named to the all-tournament team.
She had just two saves in each contest, 1-0 wins over the College of Charleston and UNCW, but helped Tech finish the non-conference regular season slate a perfect 8-0 – just the third 8-0 start for Tech in its history.
Overall, she faced a total of 17 shots, 10 after intermission against UNCW, not to mention five corners and a number of free kicks from 25-35 yards out against the Seahawks. UNCW had the wind at their backs in the second half, however McGlynn helped stave off the onslaught.
The Jacksonville, Florida native picked up her 36th and 37th victory as a Hokie and improved her record to 37-0-2 when the team gives her a lead at any point in a match. The shutouts give her 28 in her Tech career, one shy of tying the career school record (Dayle Colpitts, 29, 2010-13).
The six overall shutouts are also now the second most ever in school history through the team's first eight matches, while the two goals allowed are tied for the fewest through the same time frame (the 2012 team had seven shutouts in first eight matches and also allowed two goals).
McGlynn currently sits in a tie for the nation's lead in shutouts with those six, while her .250 GAA is the best among goalkeepers with at least 600 minutes played and her .923 save percentage is tied for third.
The Hokies are back in action this upcoming weekend when they open ACC play against Miami on Saturday night at Thompson Field. The ACC home opener is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Hurricanes.
