Men's golf signs Charlie Hanson to NLI

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech men's golf head coach Brian Sharp has announced that Charlie Hanson has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Virginia Tech and play for the Hokies in Fall 2020.  Hanson is the third-ranked golfer in the Class of 2020 in Virginia, according to National Junior Golf Scoreboard.

Hanson, from Richmond, Virginia, is an honor student and four-year letterman at Deep Run High School, where the team has won the last four Virginia state championships (2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019). He has been an all-state selection in each of the last three seasons and was recently named the 2019 All-Metro Player of the Year in Richmond. The team won the High School Golf National Invitational at Disney World this past summer, where he finished fifth individually. At Deep Run, he won the Academic Excellence Award-Winner at Deep Run for 2018-19 school year and is a member of the Math Honors Society.

As a junior player, Hanson, who only began playing golf at age 14, was a member of the victorious Virginia team at the 2019 Capital Cup. He also earned top 10 finishes at the 2019 Valentine Amateur and 2019 AJGA Pinehurst Junior championship.

"I am very excited to have Charlie become a member of our golf team next fall because of the attributes that he brings academically, athletically and socially," Sharp said. "First and foremost, he is a terrific student and will excel in the classroom during his career here. On the golf course, his swing and fundamentals are so solid that, as he grows and matures, he is only going to continue to improve. As a person, he comes from a family that instilled character, values and work ethic in him and Charlie will be an outstanding addition to the Blacksburg community and our athletics family."
