BLACKSBURG – It was a night of celebration in the Hahn Hurst Basketball Practice Center as the 1973 NIT and 2022 ACC championship teams were honored during a tipoff banquet hosted by the men's basketball program Friday. The 2022-23 season marks the 50th anniversary of Virginia Tech's first NIT championship team.
The evening began with a social hour where members of the 2022-23 Hokies greeted attendees, followed by dinner.
There are many similarities between the 1973 NIT and 2022 ACC championship teams, headlined by the veteran leadership both squads had. Don DeVoe, who steered the Hokies to the four wins in New York in March of 1973, reflects on that magical season in the video below.
Returners off the 2022 ACC championship team were next to be honored. Those included Hunter Cattoor, Justyn Mutts, Darius Maddox, Sean Pedulla, Lynn Kidd and Camden Johnson. Mike Young came to the stage and reflected on last season, his 20th as a head coach and third in Blacksburg.
The night concluded with a group picture featuring both championship teams together.
