No. 11/13 Virginia Tech falls to North Carolina 4-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 11/13 Virginia Tech Hokies were not able to record a run against North Carolina pitcher sophomore Lilli Backes on Saturday and were shut out 4-0 by the Tar Heels.

Freshman Lyndsey Grein (5-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Virginia Tech (18-5, 4-1). She struck out three in six innings pitched.

At the plate, the Hokies were paced by junior Emma Ritter, who went 1-for-3 on the day. Addy Greene and Grace Chavez also added hits for the Hokies.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Tar Heels scored two runs in the fourth off a two-run home run. They added to their advantage in the sixth, adding two more. The best opportunity for the Hokies to push a run across was in the top of the fifth inning when Emma Ritter knocked a single but Teagan Thrunk was thrown out at home on the play.

GAME NOTES

» Grein faced 30 North Carolina hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out three.
» Ritter led the Hokies at the plate, going 1-for-3.
» North Carolina was led offensively by senior Kiersten Licea, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI.
» Backes led the Tar Heels pitching staff, throwing seven scoreless innings.

The Hokies close out their series with the Tar Heels with game three at 6PM.
