CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – It didn't take long for the Hokies to make a statement at Scott Stadium Saturday.

Virginia Tech, which has won 17 of the last 18 games versus in-state rival Virginia, punched first and didn't stop, scoring five minutes into the game on its way to 24 unanswered to take a 24-0 lead into the locker room.

Big plays were the name of the game for Tech, with all three of its touchdowns being longer than 30 yards. After a 41-yard field goal from kicker John Love, wide receiver Stephen Gosnell turned in a 44-yard receiving touchdown to make it 10-0 in the first quarter.

Fellow receiver Tucker Holloway, who is wearing the iconic No. 25 jersey number today, took a reverse to the house for 33 yards to start the second quarter. Later in the second, running back Bhayshul Tuten turned on the jets for a 32-yard burst for six to push Tech's lead to 24.

Defensively, the Hokies got after it, recording six TFLs, four sacks and an interception by cornerback Mansoor Delane, who returned it 32 yards. Tech held UVA to -16 rushing yards.

The Cavaliers will start with the ball to begin the second half.
