BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech fell to No. 5 Virginia, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Tech's day was highlighted by a gutsy effort by Semra Aksu on Court No. 3, as she went the distance into a third-set tiebreaker to claim a point for the Hokies.
The Hokies battled in doubles, but a pair of 6-3 defeats on Courts No. 1 and No. 3 gave the Cavaliers an early 1-0 advantage. Semra Aksu and Erika Cheng were on the verge of victory on Court No. 2 at 5-5 before the doubles point was called.
In singles, a trio of ranked competitors for the top-five ranked visitors wrapped up straight-set wins on Courts No. 4, No. 1 and No. 2 to clinch the match.
However, the Hokies continued to fight on Courts No. 6 and No. 3.
Freshman Laima Frosch nearly pulled out a ranked win, as she went three sets with No. 115 Melodie Collard on Court No. 6.
Aksu toughed out a three-setter, as well, as she claimed a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6) over Natasha Subhash.
