Things to Know:

The Hokies and Wolfpack face off after Week 4 saw “firsts” for both teams.

Against FCS opponent Wofford last week, Tech football combined a defensive presence with offensive production for the team’s first win in the 2025 campaign. Defensive lineman Kemari Copeland spearheaded the “Lunch Pail Defense”, tallying five total tackles, half a sack, an interception and a pass deflection over just 25 snaps. His 92.9 overall defensive grade on Pro Football Focus was the second-best on the team, trailing only behind fellow defensive lineman Kody Huisman (93.3). The contest was also the first win under interim head coach Philip Montgomery, giving him his first win in a head coaching position since Nov. 26, 2022, from his time at Tulsa University.

Contrastingly, a slurry of self-inflicted mistakes in Week 4 led to NC State’s first loss of the season, coming at the hands of state rival Duke in a 45-33 contest. While the Wolfpack were only down one as the first half ended, head coach Dave Doeren’s squad were outscored 24-13 in a half that saw a blocked field goal and an interception ruin any chances of a comeback. The loss sets the Wolfpack at an even .500 (1-1) through conference play this season, while the upcoming game will mark the first conference opponent for the Hokies.

A pass-happy Wolfpack offense will face the Lunch Pail Defense on Saturday night.

Wolfpack quarterback CJ Bailey assumed the starting role as a true freshman in 2024 and has not forfeited the spot since. Now a sophomore at NC State, Bailey and his ability to make plays while being flushed out of the pocket have given his squad lots to be happy with going into Week 5 – the team’s 445 offensive yards per game in 2025 is 38th nationwide.

The Lunch Pail defense will look to snuff out the true sophomore and his 270.8 passing yards per game (33rd in FBS) on Saturday night. Isaiah Brown-Murray and the Hokies secondary will be patrolling the airspace once again, limiting the offensive production that Bailey looks to bring in Week 5. Similarly, Copeland and Kelvin Gilliam Jr. will fortify the trenches against a Wolfpack offensive line that has experience scattered across the front.

Players to Know:

Running Back/Wide Receiver Cameron Seldon
Now in his first year in maroon and orange, dual-threat offensive option Cameron Seldon joins the Hokies after spending a pair of years with the Tennessee Volunteers. Through four games this fall, the junior has been most productive in the pass game, hauling in 11 receptions for 68 yards (6.2 yards per catch). Seldon has also been a factor in the kick return game, taking two kicks back for 48 yards, both of which were seen in the contest against Old Dominion.

Safety Tyson Flowers
After spending three years at Rice University, Tyson Flowers joined Tech football this offseason and has instantly seen a prominent role in the secondary. The redshirt junior has 12 tackles in four starts for the Hokies, his best game being this past weekend against Wofford (3 total tackles, 2 QBHs). Flowers also created a fumble against Old Dominion, jarring the ball loose from running back Devin Roche in the first quarter.
