Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG, Va. - Pedro Graber, a junior men’s tennis player from Santiago, Chile, has been named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American District III At-large University Division team. Graber was a first-team selection, which was determined by voting members of CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America. He is now eligible for the national team which will be announced later this month.
To qualify for the honor, a student-athlete must be of a least a sophomore standing, have been enrolled at their current school for at least one year, have a minimum of 3.3 grade point average, and be a starter or significant reserve on their team. District III is comprised of schools in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
“I am very proud of Pedro’s academic achievements and being selected for this honor,” said Virginia Tech head coach Jim Thompson. “I am excited for him to be recognized and rewarded for his efforts. Pedro displays the same work ethic in the classroom as he does on the court.”
Graber is majoring in industrial and systems engineering and received the Skelton Award, given to the top Virginia Tech male scholar-athlete, at the Tech All-sports banquet on May 4. He has been selected to both the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and was a member of the 2008 All-ACC Academic Men’s Tennis team as well as the 2008 ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Graber received a No. 101 national ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason poll and won 14 singles and 18 doubles matches this season.
