Sharp, USA Team wins Palmer Cup

Virginia Tech associate head golf coach Brian Sharp and theUSA team won the 2010 Palmer Cup at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in NorthernIreland on June 26. Sharp was the assistant coach on the championship team.

 

The United States defeated Europe, 13-11, to claim thePalmer Cup and the victory was the Americans first in Europe since 2002 andgives the USA a 7-6-1 overall advantage in the Palmer Cup series. The event,suggested by Arnold Palmer, uses a Ryder Cup-style format and brings togetherthe top eight collegiate players in the United States against theircounterparts from GB&I.

 

As an added treat, US Open Champion Graeme McDowell, who isfrom Portrush in Northern Ireland, attended the matches and took a photo witheach team and the US Open trophy.

 

Sharp earned his position by being named the recipient ofthe 2009 Jan Strickland Award Presented by TaylorMade-Adidas to the AssistantCoach of the Year, as selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America.Chris Zambri, the head coach at Southern California, was the head coach of the USAteam.
