Hokie ClubRaleigh, N.C. -- Virginia Tech men’s soccer earned its second win of the season against ACC foe N.C. State Saturday, 2-1. The win pushes Tech to 2-4-1 on the season, 1-0-1 in ACC play. Tech has now won five of the last eight contests against N.C. State, though the overall record is in the Wolfpack’s favor (9-5-1).
N.C. State was on the board first, with Tyler Lassiter scoring in the 32nd minute off a very long free kick. Clarke Bentley retaliated soon after, finding the net in the 34th minute on a penalty kick for his second goal of the season. Bentley is now 2-2 on the year in penalty kicks. The score remained tied at the half, and N.C. State came out in the second pressuring the goal, out-shooting Tech 10-2. Tech keeper Kyle Renfro kept them out of the net in the second half, earning the win to put him at 2-2 for the season. He collected four saves for the match, three coming in the first half.
Greg Cochrane put the Hokies ahead in the 63rd minute, off a Beto Velazquez assist, that found the net off the keeper’s hands. This was Cochrane’s first goal of the season and Velazquez’s first assist. The Hokies’ two scores only came on four shots, with Jed Prater and Mikey Minutillo taking the other two shots.
Tech returns home Tuesday to face American University at 7 p.m. at Thompson Field.
