BLACKSBURG, Va. - Pedro Graber, a senior men’s tennis player from Santiago, Chile, has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-American District III At-large University Division team. Graber was a first-team selection, which was determined by voting members of CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America. He is now eligible for the national team which will be announced later this month.
To qualify for the honor, a student-athlete must be of at least sophomore standing, have been enrolled at their current school for at least one year, have a minimum of 3.3 grade point average, and be a starter or significant reserve on their team. District III is comprised of schools in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
“I am very proud of Pedro’s academic achievements and being selected for this honor,” said Virginia Tech head coach Jim Thompson. “I am excited for him to be recognized and rewarded for his efforts. Pedro displays the same work ethic in the classroom as he does on the court.”
Graber is majoring in industrial and systems engineering and received the 2009 Skelton Award, given to the top Virginia Tech male scholar-athlete. He has been selected to both the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and was a two-time member of the All-ACC Academic Men’s Tennis team as well as being selected three time to the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Graber missed the 2010 season with a wrist injury but bounced back this year to win 20 singles matches including clinching victories against NC State in the ACC Quarterfinals and against Vanderbilt in the first round of the NCAA Championships.
