Renfro named Soccer America Men's Player of the Week

WILTON, Conn. – Virginia Tech sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Renfro (Forest, Va.) has been named the Men’s Soccer Player of the Week by Soccer America for games played the week of Sept. 5-11. Earlier this week, Renfro was also named the ACC Men’s Soccer Co-Player of the Week and the Virginia Tech Athletics Hardee’s Star of the Week.

Renfro, who faced 22 shots in a 102-minute, 31-second stint against then-No. 1 ranked North Carolina on Saturday, posted a career-high nine saves and notched his second career shutout as Tech defeated the Tar Heels, 1-0 in double overtime.

He helped the Hokies earn their first win over UNC since 2007 and their first win over a number-one ranked team since 2004, when the Hokies topped Duke, 1-0, in Durham, N.C.

On Tuesday night, Renfro posted his second consecutive shutout as the Hokies defeated Longwood, 1-0, for their third straight win. Renfro had four saves in the contest and now has 24 stops on the season. He has started all five games for the 3-2-0 Hokies and has a season goals against average of 0.77.

Renfro and the rest of the Hokies return to action on Friday, Sept. 16, as they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to play 11th-ranked Boston College at 7 p.m.
