Virginia Tech and Longwood play to scoreless draw

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw tonight with Longwood at the Lancers' Athletics Complex. The Hokies moved to 5-5-2 on the season while Lancers are now 3-9-2.

After Longwood earned three corners and tallied two shots in the opening 15 minutes of play, Ben Strong had a corner which led to Hunter Jecius recording the first chance of the night for Tech on a header, but the attempt was saved by Paul Hegedus. The Lancers had a pair of opportunities 10 minutes later, but Jecius denied Anthony Ugori's shot attempt and Zach Corcoran followed that up by putting a shot off the post.

In the 36th minute, David Clemens put a strike on frame, but Hegedus came away with the stop. A pair of corners ensued for the Hokies, followed by Jed Prater putting a shot on target, but Hegedus came away with another save.

Tech held a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal through the first 45 minutes of play, but the score remained level at 0-0.

The second half saw the Hokies put four more shots on frame, including two from Ben Strong, along with a header by Jecius in the 89th minute, but they were unable to put one past Hegedus.

In overtime, Tech outshot Longwood 4-2 through 20 minutes, but the two sides ended the game as they started. It was the second game this season that the Hokies have gone to overtime, both times coming away with draws.

"We created a number of opportunities to win the game, we just weren't sharp enough in the offensive third," Virginia Tech head coach Mike Brizendine said. "It was disappointing that we couldn't find a goal, but we kept a shutout and that's a good thing."

Overall, Virginia Tech outshot the home side 12-9 and held an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Clemens led the Hokies with three shots with Jecius and Strong each adding a pair. All three tallied two shots on target. Kyle Renfro recorded one save on the night for Tech, while Hegedus came away with eight stops for Longwood.

The Hokies will return home Friday as step back into ACC play against NC State. Kickoff is set 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on the ACCDN on YouTube.
