Thomas named ACC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech cross country head coach Ben Thomas was named Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year, the league office announced today.

In earning ACC Coach of the Year honors for the first time in his tenure at Virginia Tech, Thomas directed the Hokies to their first-ever ACC men’s title this past October. Keyed by Will Mulherin’s individual championship, Tech placed three runners in the top seven, and five in the top 22, edging in-state rival Virginia by six points (55-to-61) for the team championship.

Qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1987, the Hokies finished in 22nd place after only five of its seven runners were able to complete the 10k race. The 22nd place finish marked the third-best result in the five years that Virginia Tech has been to nationals.
