Cianelli named ACC Men's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year

GREEENSORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech director of track and field Dave Cianelli has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Indoor Coach of the Year, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

Cianelli led his men's team to a first-place finish at the 2013 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which were held last week at Virginia Tech’s Rector Field House. The track and field directors at each of the ACC’s schools’ votes determined the ACC Coach of the Year honors.

The Virginia Tech men amassed 153 team points in the ACC Championship to finish 17 points ahead of second-place Florida State. It was the Hokies’ second indoor title in three years under Cianelli, who also has the distinction of having coached ACC champions in each of his last three seasons (2012 outdoor track and field, 2012 men’s cross country and 2013 indoor track and field).

Seven of Cianeilli’s student-athletes earned gold medals last weekend, including weight thrower Andrew Ziegler, who has been named to the 2013 Men’s Bowerman Watch List. Thirteen Hokies earned All-ACC honors. Virginia Tech currently owns the No. 12 spot in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National Team Computer Rankings.

This is the eighth time that Cianelli has earned the honor of being named ACC Coach of the Year.
