Hokie ClubINDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Ryan Hawkins of the Virginia Tech swimming and diving program was named an All-American for the second-straight day to close the 2013 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships Saturday at the IU Natatorium. Hawkins tallied a score of 422.40 to place third in the preliminaries, the highest finish by a Tech swimmer or diver ever at the NCAAs, to secure the honors.
In the finals, the junior took a score of 352.85 to finish eighth and grab the H2Okies’ final 11 points. He led Tech with 27 points this weekend.
Senior Logan Shinholser capped off his distinguished Tech career with a ninth-place finish to earn Honorable Mention All-America honors with a score of 457.60. The four-time All-American and ACC Champion added nine points on the day.
Sophomore Kyle Butts rounded out the H2Okie divers as he placed 25th with a score of 294.00 to complete his first national championship of his young career.
Seniors Zach McGinnis and Gregory Mahon swam their last swim for the H2Okies today. McGinnis finished 40th in the 200 backstroke as he touched the wall at the 1:45.09 mark. Mahon took a time of 1:46.25 to finish 36th overall in the 100 butterfly.
Freshman Michal Szuba was the final swim of the day. The freshman swam a time of 15:07.42 to place 29th in the 1650 freestyle.
Tech finished 20th overall with 52 points, just three points shy of its program best. The H2Okies finished higher than three ACC schools, including 2013 ACC Champions Virginia that took 27th.
