Hokies ranked 39th in final ITA poll

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is ranked No. 39 in the final team rankings as released today by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Hokies ended the year with a 16-10 overall ranking that included the program’s seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

“I’m proud of the guys this season,” said head coach Jim Thompson. “We played some really tough, close matches against some really good teams and I thought we consistently performed well. We are a very young team and I am really looking forward to the future of this program and where we are going from here.”

The final poll of the season also reflects the team’s highest ranking this year following the Hokies upset of then-No. 22 Michigan in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Tech also claimed wins this season against ranked opponents Miami (#55), Florida State (#30), NC State (#36), North Carolina (#70), Old Dominion (#54) and Michigan State (#48).

Virginia Tech finished with a 6-4 mark in the ACC. The league was represented by eight teams in the final ITA standings, including four teams in the top-25.

The ITA will release the final singles and doubles rankings as well as the regional rankings next week on June 5.
