BLACKSBURG - The H2Okies are set to begin postseason competition at the 2015 ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving and Men’s Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Georgia, on Wednesday, February 18 through Saturday, February 21.
Tech enters the championship competition as the second-place team in the conference, holding a 6-2 conference record and a 10-3 regular-season record. It has earned victories over Duke, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech and Miami, among others, and has only suffered losses to ranked opponents.
H2Okie swimmers also hold eight ACC top-six times from the regular season, highlighted by Weronika Paluszek, who has the fourth fastest 100 and 200 breast times, and Klaudia Nazieblo, who has the third fastest 200 fly and fourth fastest 100 back. At last year’s ACC Championships, Paluszek won bronze medals in both the 100 and 200 breast events.
The 2014 ACC Championships saw the H2Okies finish in fifth in one of the deepest fields in ACC history, but most of Tech’s top finishers from last season are back again this year.
The H2Okies look stacked among the women’s diving field, with Tech divers holding the top-five ACC regular-season top scores for the platform event. Kaylea Arnett also holds the second and fifth-best 1-meter scores, while Kelli Stockton holds the highest platform score and seventh-highest 3-meter score. Last season, Arnett won her third-straight ACC Women’s Championship’s Most Valuable Diver award after winning gold in the 1-meter and 3-meter and winning bronze in the platform.
The men’s diving team is also looking strong going into the championships. The men’s diving championships are held a week prior to the men’s swimming championships, so the men’s final team results won’t be available until Saturday, February 28 at the conclusion of the men’s swimming competition. Last year, Tech’s divers scored more points in the diving portion of the championships than any other ACC team, giving the H2Okies a lead that would eventually lead to their 2014 ACC Men’s Championship.
Thomas Shinholser currently holds the third-best 1-meter score from this season and the third-best platform score from this season. Ahead of him in the platform, Mauro Castro-Silva holds the second-best platform score of the season and the eighth-best 3-meter score. Kyle Butts also holds the fourth-best platform score.
Competition will begin Wednesday at 10 a.m. for the prelims for the women’s 3-meter diving event, followed by the men’s 1-meter diving prelims at 2 p.m. Finals competition will begin in the evening at 5 p.m. for the women’s 3-meter diving and at 6 p.m. for the 200 medley relay, the men’s 1-meter and the 800 free relay.
