Hokie ClubTALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Irena Sediva broke the ACC record, the ACC Championship Meet record, the Virginia Tech school record and the Mike Long Outdoor Track facility record on her way to a first-place finish in the women’s javelin throw to pace the Hokies on the second day of the 2015 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
At the end of the second day of competition, the men’s team sits in fifth-place overall with 23 points while the women’s team sits in a tie for 10th place with 13 points overall. Seven events have been scored on both the men’s and women’s side while 14 events have yet to be decided on both sides.
Sediva’s throw of 192’5” (58.66m) moved her to No. 9 on the NCAA All-Time list. Sediva managed five legal throws in her six rounds and every single throw would have won her the ACC Championship title but it was her fifth throw that took the aforementioned records down.
Stuart Robertson downed the school record in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase final with an impressive time of 8:42.73, good enough for a third-place finish and the bronze medal. Two other Hokies scored points in the same race as Darren Barlow finished in fifth place with a time of 8:49.34 while Daniel Jaskowak finished in sixth with a time of 8:53.76. All three set personal bests in the race.
Several other Hokies managed to qualify for finals in their respective races. Darius Watkins and Alex Ellison started things off in the men’s 100-meter race. Watkins finished in sixth overall with a time of 10.67 seconds while Ellison finished in seventh overall with a time of 10.67 seconds as well.
Hanna Green was the top overall qualifier in the women’s 800-meter race. Green won her heat with an impressive time of 2:04.36 seconds. Green claimed the indoor title in the 800 earlier this season and will look to repeat in tomorrow’s final. Tomorrow’s race will pit Green against Clemson’s Natoya Goule once again. When the two met at ACC Indoor Championships, Green walked away with the title but when the two met at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this season, Goule took the national title.
Patrick Joseph was the second overall qualifier in the men’s 800-meter race with a time of 1:50.00. Joseph claimed the indoor title in the men’s mile earlier this year. Even though he is not running his typical race, Joseph looks poised to make a run at his second individual ACC title.
There are still a lot of points on the board and the race for the ACC team title is sure to tighten tomorrow. The Hokies’ deep pole vault crew should bring Tech back within contention for the team title on the men’s side.
