Hokie ClubKNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s track & field teams put up solid results at the Tennessee Challenge hosted by the University of Tennessee on Saturday afternoon.
The field events posted top finishes for the Hokies on both the men’s and women’s side. For the women, Sabine Kopplin won the javelin throw with a mark of 163’03” (49.77m) on her second attempt while Johnna Dominick claimed the women’s high jump hitting a height of 5’08.75” (1.75m).
The men’s field events posted solid results as well as Tomas Kruzliak was the highest collegiate finisher in the men’s hammer throw with a mark of 218’06” (66.60m), taking second place overall. That mark moves Kruzliak to 15th place on the national leaderboard. Brad Johnson finished in eighth in the pole vault hitting a height of 16’07.25” (5.06m).
The sprinters also posted quality results. The men’s 4x100-meter relay team of Dante Price, Darius Watkins, Alex Ellison and Demitri Knowles won the race with a time of 41.43 seconds.
Aaron Simpson took third in the men’s 110-meter hurdles crossing the finish line in a time of 14.92 seconds.
The men’s 100-meter dash saw Watkins and Price post a three-four finish. Watkins was third place with a time of 10.72 seconds while Price was fourth with a time of 10.73 seconds. Watkins followed up that performance with a sixth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.67 seconds.
The men’s 400-meter hurdles saw Alexander Merritt finish in sixth place with a time of 54.22 seconds. Austin Kolko was right behind him in seventh place with a time of 54.38 seconds.
The women’s sprinters saw success as well. Christine London finished in seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.74 seconds. London followed that up with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.16.
Tech also competed at the Payton Jordan Invitational. Due to deadlines, those results will be posted tomorrow morning.
The Hokies will be competing next on Thursday at the Virginia Tech-Roanoke College Distance Classic.
BOONE, N.C. - Several distance runners posted quality performances at the Appalachian State Invite hosted by Appalachian State University.
On the women’s side, Shalonda Mitchell finished in second in the women’s 800 with a time of 2:13.38. Marie Johnston, competing unattached, finished in fourth with a time of 2:14.82.
Katie Kennedy finished in second in the women’s 1500-meter race, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:34.71. Competing unattached, Tessa Riley finished in third with a time of 4:36.35.
The women’s 10,000-meter race saw Abigail Motley and Madalyn Nuckols finish in third and fourth places, respectively. Motley finished with a time of 36:23.58 while Nuckols posted a time of 37:28.68.
For the men, Prince Owusu won the 800-meter race posting an impressive time of 1:50.36. Kevin Cianfarini finished in sixth in the same race with a time of 1:52.48.
The men’s 1500-meter race saw Ashkan Mohammadi finish in fifth place with a time of 3:53.23. Just behind him in sixth place was George Carter, competing unattached, with a time of 3:56.35.
The men’s 4x400-meter relay team of Owusu, Bret Freed, Griffin Carmichael and Travis Correa took second place with a time of 3:22.52.
Tech took the top three spots in the men’s 5000 with Andrew Gaiser winning the race with a time of 14:54.98. Brent Musselman took second with a time of 15:08.54 while Andrew Eason took third with a time of 15:28.78.
Tech also competed at the Payton Jordan Invitational. Due to deadlines, those results will be posted tomorrow morning.
The Hokies will be competing next on Thursday at the Virginia Tech-Roanoke College Distance Classic.
