H20kies go combined 3-1 on the weekend at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams went a combined 3-1 on the weekend in their meet with Kentucky and LSU.

The men knocked off both LSU and Kentucky, beating the Tigers 237-149 and the Wildcats 209-180. The women beat Kentucky 203.5-185.5 and fell to LSU 247-142.

“Our H2Okies came out fighting today. It was a lot of fun being together on the pool deck, seeing our team’s desire to compete for the cause. Both team’s had deficits to overcome going into the last session and watching them convert was gratifying. Lucas Bureau, Brandon Fiala and Michal Szuba were key for the men today. Klaudia Nazieblo, Weronika Paluszek and Maggie Gruber were key for the women,” head coach Ned Skinner said.

The women’s 200 medley A relay finished second with a time of 1:43.06. Fiona Donnelly finished second the in 400 IM, swimming a 4:21.63. Gruber finished second in the 100 fly. Jessica Hespeler finished second in the 200 free.

Switzer finished third in 400 IM at 4:01.84. Newcomer Norbert Szabo continued his strong start for the Hokies with a first place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 48.71. Bureau swam a 1:40.08 to win the 200 free.

Fiala won the 100 free and the 200 IM as Szabo finished second in that event. The A relay for the men’s 200 free won with a time of 1:21.10. Szuba won the 500 free with a time of 4:30.02. Ian Ho finished first in the 50 free with a time of 20.41.

In diving, Logan Stevens finished second in the platform, narrowly behind first place by .15 points. Mauro Castro-Silva and Ben Schiesl finished third and fourth. Ashlynn Peters placed fourth in the women’s platform.

“I’m really happy where the divers are in their training right now and competing in this high-level competition showed great consistency with the men and very strong performances from the women. It was important to compete in all three events including the platform to help us get ready for the championship season,” diving coach Ron Piemonte said.

The Hokies will return home next weekend on Friday and Saturday as they host Virginia with Towson with senior day taking place on Saturday.
