AMES, Iowa - Shannon Morton led off for the Virginia Tech track & field team setting a new program record in the mile run on Saturday afternoon at the Iowa State Classic.
Morton improved her mile time to 4:39.38 to shatter the previous Tech record set in 2009.
“I am very happy with Shannon [Morton]’s race,” head cross country and distance coach Ben Thomas said. “She has been looking really good in training and it’s great to see her break through in her first mile of the season.”
For the second consecutive week, Neil Gourley ran a sub-four-minute mile of 3:59.66 to maintain his standings in the Tech record book.
“Neil [Gourley] broke four minutes for the second time in eight days,” Thomas said. “He’s looking forward to battling the loaded field of milers at the ACC meet.”
All-American Hanna Green continued the momentum on the women’s side with a first place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.87.
“Hanna Green won against a very competitive field. She is going to be ready for the ACC and NCAA Indoor meets,” Thomas said.
