AMES, Iowa - Led by all-American Thomas Curtin, each of the Virginia Tech track & field distance runners recorded a personal best time on Friday at the Iowa State Classic.
Not only did Curtin win the 5,000-meter run, but he also reset his previous program record recorded last year with a time of 13:37.10.
“Thomas Curtin had an outstanding performance winning the 5,000-meter run with a new personal best,” head cross country and distance coach Ben Thomas said. “After this weekend, it should be a top-five time, if not the national leader. He led by himself through most of the race. He was challenged in the last lap then kicked away at the end.”
Andrew Gaiser recorded another personal best time for the No. 3 men’s team with a time of 14:29.01 in the 5,000 meters. Abigail Motley did the same on the women’s side with a 4th place overall finish in 16:41.33.
Lauren Berman rounded out the women’s competition with a personal record in the 3,000-meter run with 9:41.49.
Daniel Jaskowak, Darren Barlow, and Andrew Goldman wrapped up the first day’s competition for your Hokies each with personal bests in the 3,000-meters. Jaskowak ran in 8:05.35 to now rank fifth in program history while Barlow and Goldman posted times of 8:09.37 and 8:12.30, respectively.

The Hokies distance runners will resume competition tomorrow morning in Ames to wrap up the Iowa State Classic.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Hokies sprinters and jumpers continued Tech’s success at the Samford Invitational with several personal records set in Birmingham, Alabama on Friday.
Nora McKiver and Shanel Burr began competition by winning heats four and five to qualify for the final of the 60-meter hurdles. Burr and McKiver placed fifth and sixth in the final with respective times of 8.57 and 8.65.
On the men’s side, Dairus Watkins won heat five to advance to the final, finishing with a time of 6.97. Watkins and Dante Price followed up with top-10 finishes in the 200-meter dash in 22.03 and 22.11, respectively.
McKiver continued her success with a third-place finish in the 200-meter days with a personal best time of 24.14. Ama-Selina Tchume added another personal record and top-10 finish in the 200 with a time of 24.87.
In the 400-meter dash, Courtney Blanden and Kacia Vines finished 1-2 in section six with personal best times of 57.74 and 57.80, respectively. For the men’s team, Corey Hackett-Greene won section five in a personal best time of 49.13, placing eighth overall.
Leading off the jumpers, Emily Miller set a best mark of 5.06 meters (16-7.25) in the long jump while James Carver earned an eighth place finish in the high jump with a personal best 1.95-meter (6-4.75) mark.
The Tech sprinters and jumpers will return to Blacksburg to compete at the Virginia Tech challenge on Friday and Saturday.
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Wrapping up Friday’s Virginia Tech track & field competition, the women’s pole vaulters earned three top-five finishes at the Liberty Quad meet in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Hannah Meador and Erica Hjerpe led the Hokie vaulters, both placing second with marks of 3.75 meters (12-3.5).
Erinn Schaal placed fourth in a field of 15, clearing the 3.60-meter (11-9.75) height.
The Hokies pole vaulters are scheduled to compete in Blacksburg on Friday and Saturday to host the Virginia Tech Challenge.
