ATLANTA, Ga. - The Virginia Tech women’s swimming and diving team completed day two at the 2016 NCAA Championships on Thursday night.
The Hokies 400 medley relay earned Honorable Mention All-American honors as they finished in 14th place and earned six points. The relay, composed of Klaudia Nazieblo, Weronika Paluszek, Maggie Gruber and Jessica Hespeler, swam a time of 3:33.48 in the finals.
“Three school records already broken and the women are really doing a great job for each other. The relay fought hard tonight and moved up which is key as every point matters in a meet like this. We have great chances tomorrow and the women are excited about the challenge,” head coach Ned Skinner said.
Hespeler swam a 4:43.65 in the 500 free prelims and finished 30th overall. Gruber swam a 22.76 in the prelims of the 50 free and finished 45th overall. Ashlynn Peters, a freshman, competed in the 1-meter and finished 42nd with a score of 239.70.
In the 400 medley relay, Nazieblo led off and swam a split time of 52.21, a new school record. Paluszek logged a split of 59.39 while Gruber swam a 52.49 and Hespeler closed the relay out with a 49.39 split.
The Hokies were coming off an opening day on Wednesday in which the 800 free relay team swam a 7:07.20. Hespeler, Fiona Donnelly, Alice Boutant and Adriana Grabski were apart of that team that finished 20th overall.
The Hokies will be back in the pool at 10 a.m. with the schedule of events tomorrow including the prelims for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 3-meter diving and the 200 medley relay with a 6 p.m. start for the finals.
