Hokie ClubAUSTIN, Texas - Brad Johnson led Tech’s pole vaulters at the Texas Relays with his first place finish in section C on Thursday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Johnson’s 5.31-meter (17-5) clearance was not only a personal best mark, but also a mark to place him 10th in Virginia Tech program history. James Steck and Jared Allison cleared the 5.06-meter (16-7.25) mark to place 12th and 16th, respectively.
Erica Hjerpe represented the women’s team, finishing 10th in section B of the women’s pole vault. Her 3.91-meter (12-10) height ranks her seventh in Tech’s all-time record book.
Torben Laidig, Chris Uhle, and Deakin Volz will round out the Hokies’ competition at the Texas Relays, participating in section A of the men’s pole vault.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Hokies’ throwers highlighted day one of the Florida Relays with several top-10 performances on Friday at Percy Beard Track.
Pavla Kuklova began the day for the Hokies placing third in the hammer throw to improve to sixth all-time with her 59.39-meter (194-10) mark. Tomas Kruzliak followed suit on the men’s side, placing sixth with a 68.74-meter (225-6) throw.
Irena Sediva highlighted the group of javelin throwers as the top collegian finisher, throwing 57.83 meters (189-9) to place second. Sabine Kopplin placed seventh with a 48.58-meter (159-4) mark while Teagan Rasche took eighth with 47.15-meter (154-8) throw.
Both Collin McKenny and David Prince placed eighth in the discus and long jump, respectively. McKenny met the 48.37-meter (158-8) distance on his first throw of the day while Prince met his 7.14-meter (23-5.25) mark on the second jump.
Shanel Burr and Jada Gundran began the day on the track for the Hokies in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 13.88 and 14.19, respectively. Aaron Simpson set a new personal best in the 110-meter hurdles for the men’s team.
Dante Price competed in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, clocking in at 10.73 and 21.57.
In the 400 meters, Chester Hebden set a new personal record with his 48.76-time. Courtney Blanden led the women’s team with a 55.63 finish in section six while Kacia Vines competed in section eight.
Austin Kolko rounded out the competition with a 53.90-time in the 400-meter hurdles to conclude day one of the Florida Relays.
Jordan Roach and Marek Barta will compete on Saturday morning to wrap up the Florida Relays.
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - In the final event of the night, the Hokies’ 10,000-meter runners led the distance squad on the first day of William & Mary’s Colonial Relays at Zable Stadium.
Thomas Curtin and Andrew Gaiser finished 1-2 in the 10,000 meters, clocking in at 29:29.12 and 29:52.29, respectively, to set personal best times on the outdoor track.
Tessa Riley finished eighth in the 800 meters, leading the Hokies with a 2:12.49-time. Shalonda Mitchell and Shannon Quinn finished in 2:15.29 and 2:15.30, respectively. For the men’s team, Christopher Short clocked in at 1:55.67 in the 800-meter run.
Alexander Merritt wrapped up competition for Tech with a 56.26 time in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Hokies resume competition tomorrow morning with the 5,000-meter run before ending the day with the 4x800-meter and the distance medley relay.
