Hokies win the 11th annual Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team won the Wolstein Classic over the weekend. Tech beat out No. 13 UC Santa Barbara, No. 18 Ohio State and Oakland with a 2-0-0 mark.

Four Hokies were named to the All-Tournament Team Sunday night; forward Marcelo Acuna, goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard, defensemen Alessandro Mion and forward Andre Thomas. Acuna was also named the Most Valuable Player of the weekend.

“I am proud of our team and what they were able to put together this weekend,” said head coach Mike Brizendine. “We showed our commitment to hard work and our ability to fight through the elements.”

The Hokies upset the Buckeyes 1-0 in double overtime Friday night in front of a crowd of 1, 979 Ohio State fans. Marcelo Acuna scored the game winner in the 107th minute off an assist from Alessandro Mion.

Tech continued to dominate on Sunday as they downed Oakland 3-0 at Jesse Owens Memorial Field. Marcelo Acuna, Elias Tamburini and Andre Thomas all had goals against the Golden Grizzlies.

Acuna scored a goal each game for a total of four points in his Hokie debut. Lundgaard tallied his tenth and eleventh shutouts of his career, making a total of six saves. Thomas got his first goal of the season against Oakland, helping to produce on offense. Mion worked for the backend and up front, playing sharp defense all weekend and tallying an assist against Ohio State.

UC Santa Barbara also had a 2-0-0 mark but because of the goal differential, the Hokies took the tournament.
