No. 23 Hokies draw with No. 9 Charlotte to end non-conference season

BLACKSBURG- The No. 23 Virginia Tech men’s soccer team (9-3-3) went 110 minutes against No. 9 Charlotte (8-2-1) for a 0-0 draw Tuesday night. This was the Hokies’ eighth shutout of the season, tying their previous program record for shut outs in a single season. Tech ends their non-conference play unbeaten with a record of 7-0-2.

Tech began the match strong, holding possession for the beginning of the half. Charlotte picked up the pace as the 45 minutes dwindled taking the battle to the midfield.

The 49ers kicked off the second half with more offense pressure making the Hokie defense work for possession. Virginia Tech saw great chances in the 75th minute off a free kick taken by Alessandro Mion and in the 80th minute from Elias Tamburini forcing a diving save.

Both overtime periods were much like the first 90 minutes. Both teams played back and forth looking for the golden goal. Tech ended their non-conference campaign with a tie against Charlotte. The Hokies were unbeaten in non-conference play this season.

The Hokies will travel to North Carolina on Saturday for their last road game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Chapel Hill.

Head Coach Mike Brizendine Quotes

-“We told the guys before the game that this will be very similar to what an NCAA post season game would be like”.

-“I’m happy that we were able to get our 8th shutout tonight against a very good Charlotte team. With that said, I thought we created good enough chances to win the game.”

-“We have a couple of days to rest, recover, and prepare before we face one of our toughest matches in UNC.”
